Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, In the last year I have only had 3 periods. In January 2010, July 2010 and October 2010. I am 14 years old and I started by period 3 years ago. I have no defiante signs of symptoms inbetween the dates above. Is this normal or is there an underlying problem?
It is important to know if your menstrual cycle was regular when it started. Was it only in 2010 when you had menstrual irregularities? Or has it been irregular since it started 3 years ago? Menstrual problems have a variety of causes. The common ones are:
- Weight: it is important to note that fat is needed to make hormones. For example, those who are very skinny and those women who are very active in sports (muscle mass >> fat) have low body fat hence there won’t be enough to produce the necessary hormones each cycle
- Diet: a balanced diet is required to optimize production of hormones (meats, fat, carbohydrates and vegetables)
- Hormone dysfunction: Thyroid hormones, reproductive hormones, etc.
These are only the common ones. Regardless if your period was regular or not a few years ago, I strongly suggest for you to see a doctor whenever possible to determine the root cause of the menstrual irregularities and avoid serious consequences. In my opinion, if there is a problem indeed, it is important to know what it is, correct or treat it early on so future problems may be prevented. |
