Wrong Acyclovir dosage for Shingles? |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My GP prescribed me Acyclovir for a small (my first) outbreak of Shingles 800mg 2x per day, for 10 days. The outbreak is small, only a few inches, but on my lower spine, and painful. He also prescribed Prednisone (20mg 2x per day). And some Cimetidine for heartburn. He said that it looked like it was "on it's way out, but let's nip it in the bud" with some meds. I called my best friend who is a Doctor (in residency) up in San Francisco, who said that the Acyclovir dosage should probably be more like 800mg 5x a day. What should I do? My GP is out for the weekend.. Dear WT: Certainly the dosage for Herpes Zoster or Shingles is 800mg every 4 hours or 5 per day like your friend said. I would suggest you to contact your physician and confirm your prescription. This medication won’t cure your Shingles but would accelerate the process. I wish you the best. |
