Dear Ask The Doctor: My daughter has been told that she may have cervical cancer. a biopsy has been sent to a lab in texas to determine stage. She was just tested for STD and HPV and had no signs of either. Does this information conflict?
Dear Brittney: This information does sound contradictory. In order to have cervical cancer, one needs to be infected with the Human papilloma virus (HPV) . Howevber there are only certain strains of HPV which cause cancer ie 16,18,31,33. The others dont lead to cancer but to the development of warts. Depending on which serotypes the test was looking at it could be either way. Thus it is safer to take a biopsy of a suspicious lesion on the cervix to be safe. |
