PAP smear showing Koilocytotic Atypia |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Below is the result is got from a recent pap smear: "Smear shows sheets of intermediate and superficial cells, occasional parabasal cells, occasional squamous cells with perinuclear halo, few with inflammatory changes, bacili and occasional polymorphs. Endocervical cell component not detected. Inflammatory cell with Koilocytotic Atypia." Doc, Is there anything to worry about this condition?? Dear Joanne: I realize how worried you are about your recent PAP smear test. The description you provided mentions Koilocytic Atypia which means that there are early changes in the size and shape of cells; these are considered mild abnormalities caused by HPV infection. Let me reassure you that this does not mean cancer or Dysplasia but I would definitely suggest you follow up on this and testing to rule out HPV presence. On the other hand, the lack of endocervical cells might grant a possible repetition of this test. Certainly your Gynecologist might need to evaluate you first and make a decision. I hope I cleared your doubt. |
