Blood pressure meds: Why should I take it every day?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Blood pressure meds, my mom does not take her meds every day, her b.p is not high every day and she hates taking pills. So she takes it once a week or when she feels she needs it or if her feet swell. Isn't this more harmful to her than taking it at all?
Being poorly compliant to BP meds can be harmful. The BP fluctuates everyday in relation to activity. It is not more harmful taking the BP meds on an as-needed basis per patient’s discretion but not taking it everday can have serious consequences. High blood pressure is a known risk factor for heart disease, including heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, to name a few. She may not be feeling anything but her high blood pressure is already causing damage to these vital organs slowly (but surely). You should try harder to convince her taking BP meds to avoid these devastating consequences. I do hope I have answered your question and take care always. |
