How do I get rid of my Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammatory condition of the foot caused by excessive wear to the plantar fascia or plantar aponeurosis that supports the arches of the foot or by biomechanical faults that cause abnormal pronation.

DEAR ASK THE DOCTOR: Have you any tips to help with plantars fasciitis? I play lots of sports and am having trouble because of it. I have been suffering for over 3 months now. What do i do?

DEAR TYLER: This is an extremely uncomfortable condition. It is a good idea to start trying to manage it early.

Plantar fasciitis is due to inflammation at the point where the ligament that supports the longitudinal arch (toe to heel) of the foot is attached to the bottom of the heel bone.

Probably as a result of a minor injury it becomes inflamed but instead of healing continues to be tender and painful.

Although many patients may need medical help, there certainly are things you can do at once:

* First either purchase a soft insole for your shoe or wear a well-padded heel such as those in trainers. This will cushion the painful area and prevent further damage.

* Oral medication is of limited value but non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen (Nurofen) can help.

* Local massage can also help by encouraging blood flow to the affected 'hot spot' and helping it to heal.

If these remedies do not help, you will need to see your GP for advice.
