How do you know you have shingles for sure?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Last night I felt burning electrical pain in right flank right above waist band of slacks and thats when I noticed a half a dozen small red sores. how do you know when you have shingles for sure? they don't really hurt since they popped out and one additional sore has surfaced tonight.

Dear Cindy: Shingles is typically characterized in immunocompetent individuals by a unilateral vesicular eruption with a well-defined dermatomal distribution. The diagnosis is usually established based solely on the clinical presentation by your doctor. Diagnostic techniques include viral culture, direct immunofluorescence testing, and the polymerase chain reaction assay, which is the most sensitive test.
