Chicken pox and shingles

Dear Ask The Doctor: Ive never had chicken pox and they said i have shingles could i have both

Dear Angel: Shingles is caused by a re activation of the chicken pox virus that was lying dormant in the nerve roots near the spinal cord and brain. You would necessary need to have the virus in order to develop shingles. Most adults don’t remember since chicken pox generally occurs at a very early age. I hope I cleared your doubt.
