32, female knee pain, weak knees

Q: I have always sat cross legged otherwise my legs would go all over the place. A couple years back I started to get knee pains, squatting, upstairs bending and twisting certain ways. Im 32 now and my knees tend to want to go backwards all the time and its quite painful. How can I stop that? are there any exercises or something to maybe strengthen them and get rid of the pain?
