5 weeks pregnant and constipated, wanting to take stool softner

Patient : I am 5 weeks and 4 days pregnant. Is it safe to take a stool softner if I am constipated?
Doctor :   Stool softners are safe to take during pregnancy. The active ingredients in these products aren't absorbed by the body, so they're unlikely to have an adverse effect on a developing baby. I would however still consult your family doctor before taking the softner.
