A Beginner's Guideline to Type I Diabetes Care

Patient

Q: I am of 21 years old and I have been recently diagnosed with Diabetes. However, the doctors in my locality are not taking this seriously and are delaying their schedules. Consulting private medical centers is something which I can not afford since I am a student. Hence, I was planning to take care of myself at home. I wanted to know what basic guidelines, as a beginner, I can follow to start taking care of me? Besides, my cholesterol levels are double than the normal range limit. Please suggest a 'free foods' list too.
Thank you.
