Acute, periodic knee pain

Q: I've had knee problems for the past 4 years. Last time I went to see a doctor about them, they saw nothing wrong but told me to make sure I was working out my hips and leg muscles. It's been quite a few months, closer to a year, since that visit. I have been extremely active this summer, biking 5 miles a day, running, etc. but my knees haven't been getting better. In fact, the past few days they have been very bad. This happens a lot; where they'll be fine then all of a sudden, they hurt even when I'm not moving them. I have knee braces and ice packs galore that I use; although the braces do tend to come off when I run. I don't want to go back into the doctor just to hear that there is nothing wrong with them. I was hoping I could get some advice, suggestions, opinions, etc... anything that might help this knee pain stop.
