Allergies v. Cold - when is it time to see the doctor?

Patient

Q: I have been feeling ill for 6 days now and cannot tell if I have allergies or a cold. I was recently laid off and do not have benefits so I don't want to go to my doctor unless absolutely necessary. my symptoms are as follows: clear runny stuffed nose, sore scratchy throat with slightly swollen tonsils, slight cough, uncomfortable feeling in chest when I breathe hard, no fever. I have taken over the counter allergy pills for the last 3 days but it does not seem to make a difference. Any ideas?
