Patient : My older brother has Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, emphysema, is getting the serum transfusions, and is permanently on oxygen. My younger brother has it but has no symptoms. My older sister's CT scan earlier this week showed heavy scarring in her lungs, but they told her it was due to repeated infections. Could she have the deficiency too? She and I both have a chronic cough. My doctor has been treating me for what he calls "cough asthma" since I was 40 years old.
