Am I really pregnant or is this something else?

Patient : My husband and I are trying to have a baby; my last period was on August 2-September 7. We started having sex on September 8th and every other day up until on the 16th of this month I had some unusual spotting and cramping that lasted about 3 days. I was much lighter than my regular period. It was like the kind of period that I wish I had every month. My period is not supposed to return until the 26th. The only symptoms of pregnancy that I am having are nausea with no vomiting, constipation, headaches, lower back pain, and I am bit hungrier than usual. I took an hpt on September 21 and it was negative, could that have been too soon, could I be pregnant?
