Back Pain - Caused by Neck?

Patient : I have had severe pain in my mid to upper back for about 15 years. I do have scoliosis, but doctors have told me that shouldn't cause pain. My doctor is suggesting an expensive MRI of my NECK. Is it more likely that a problem in my neck would be causing pain in my back, rather than a problem in back?
