Back rib injury from coughing?

Patient : I have had a lingering dry cough and itchy throat for the last month after I had a head cold. I was waiting it out because I didn't think there is anything to be done about it at a doctor's office. Anyway, a couple days ago, I started noticing on my left side, back rib cage that it feels like there is a golf ball on and under my back ribs when I lay down on my side. I don't know if it is possible, but I thought it might be a hernia from hard coughing. About an hour ago, I coughed, as I have been doing for several weeks, and something happened... it tore or something... and now I can't move or cough or take a deep breath with this severe stabbing sensation from my back rib cage. I can't go to the doctor until tomorrow, but I was wondering if you might have an idea of what happened or what it is? Thank you.
