Benefit of folic acid right after missed period.

Patient

Q: I was not trying to get pregnant but got pregnant anyway. Its been 11 days since my missed period (usually I get it this month on 28th, next month 21st next 14th, next 7th etc). I have been reading a lot about folic acid. The truth is I am a very poor eater on the move all the time and has previously been diagnosed with anemia. Someone told me its too late to help my baby since folic is needed in preparing the uterine wall and taking it now will not improve anything since the placenta is not formed. My question is can eating humongous amounts of folic acid from now going to help my baby? I am scared stiff of having my baby develop defects that could have been prevented. But in the meantime am eating as much folic as I can. Thanks.
