Scabies is a infectious transmissible parasitic infection that is caused by a mite called scarcoptes scabiei. Treatment is by application of permethrin. This should be applied on the entire body from neck down to soles of the feet. Usually the treatment needs to be repeated 7 days after the first treatment to be entirely effective and needs to be kept for at-least 8-14 hours each time. Antihistamines can also be used for itching which may persist even 2-3 weeks are treatment with permethrin. Moreover in order to prevent new infection all beddings, clothes , sheets should be washed thoroughly before reuse and all members of the family should be treated.
