Patient : I am an 18 year old Medical Student and am having trouble staying awake throughout the day, generally sleeping 'long' hours; about 10hrs if I do not need to wake up for lectures. I have tried various methods whilst trying to avoid stimulants like coffee and energy drinks but I just find myself sleepy all though and have a general sense of apathy which is affecting my studies. Also I regularly have what I believe are tension headaches, where I sort of have a band of pressure around my head and behind my ears towards the lower region of my neck and also around my eyes. Paracetamol doesn't seem to help much. I'm not sure what to do as it's hard enough to keep up with studies without this problem; as of course you know. I was wondering if you had any suggestions and hope you can help. Also, I have tried to change my sleeping pattern, panadols and paracetamol for my headaches, Ginseng tea and regular to try and calm me down, forcing myself to try and wake up (showers, washing my face, loud alarms in the morning, I even tried chocolate treats to try and give me that initial boost in the morning, but the first chance I get I'll end up sleeping.
