Patient : I am only 16 and I've played soccer all my life. I've had lower back pain for a few years now but for the last month it has flared up not only in my lower back but also between my shoulder blades and neck. It has gotten so bad that some days I can't even go to school, I just lay in bed on a heating pad. I've been to a sports medicine doctor who took an MRI and a CT scan but didn't find anything. He then gave me a quartazone shot which didn't help. I've been on anti- inflammatory's and every other type of medicine from antidepressants to pain killers to help me sleep but nothing works. I started noticing numbness and tingling down my legs to where some times I can't even feel them. I've been thinking it might be a herniated disc but that would've shown up on my scans. I've had to take a break from soccer because my back has gotten so bad and now my legs feel like they're not there. We're not sure if it's a sport injury or what because I stay active and I'm in good shape. What I'm trying to say is should we try to find a neurologist or should we give the sports medicine doctor a chance? What should we do next? We live near the Houston Medical Center so finding a doctor isn't really a problem.
