Patient :Hello, I have a very severe virus and have been sick for 5 days. It is in both my head: running nose, serious pressure in the ears, glands in throat are as hard as rocks, body: hot/cold, body aches, shivering, temp above normal but not much, , cannot sleep very much, am nauseated, and have a lot of tightness / wheezing / phlegm in my chest. I went to the doctor yesterday as I was having trouble breathing and was wheezing. he listened to my chest and said everything should be fine. Normally when I get a cold, it does not go into my chest. I am fit, lift weights and do various other forms of cardio / resistance training. I am an occasional smoker. I do not have any issues with my breathing normally at all. I have had a very bronchial cough with this from the beginning. I had a couple of bouts of bronchitis when I was a child, but nothing to do with my chest since I have been an adult. This morning I coughed up phlegm and there was a small amount of blood in it. Shortly after that, I blew my nose and there was a small amount of blood in there too. About an hour later, I coughed again and there was quite a bit more in it. I have been coughing a lot for 5 days and this is the first time I noticed it. I feel the same as I did for the last two days. My throat is quite sore today on top of all the other things. I can see my esophagus being really irritated after this amount of coughing for this long. What amount of blood is a cause to be of concern? Should I go into my doctor? hospital? Any assistance you can provide would be gratefully appreciated.
