Constant dry heaving from cutting down alcohol use
Patient :A family member has been constantly dry heaving. He has dealt with alcoholism for quite some time and has recently started gradually drinking less. With his waning health he has lost a lot of weight in the past couple years, but the dry heaving started around the same time as the cutting down of alcohol. We've tried to give him Tums, water, etc but we understand that there is a lot of excess acidity coming from him still needing to consume some alcohol to avoid withdrawal. Is the dry heaving a big concern? Or is it a side effect of his cutting down? He also is a smoker but quitting is too stressful for him right now. He is quite against seeking medical attention unless necessary. Thank you.
