Patient :I am a 16 year old female, 92 lbs and 5 feet tall. I notice that I frequently have trouble with constipation. I stopped drinking soda and I normally drink 16 oz of plain water a day and I also drink flavored carbonated water. However, I am always constipated. I normally defecate about three times a week. I went to my doctor for this and I was prescribed dietary fiber. This works along with laxatives but I don't understand why I can't defecate on my own. My stool is normally hard and looks like pebbles. For some reason, I am very gassy and get abdominal cramps frequently from the gas. I eat three times a day. A healthy breakfast, light lunch and dinner. However, I rarely exercise. The only exercise I get is walking around in school etc. My question is, why am I frequently constipated and how can I have regular bowel movements without the help of laxatives ?
