Continuous knee pain

Patient : I have been having trouble with my knee for the past few months. I feel pain in my left knee whenever I do any form of exercise, particularly exercises that require me to engage my knees. Recently it has even gotten hard to run without feeling pain. I have also been unable to kneel and apply my weight onto my left knee with a sharp pain. When I was younger I had a few health scares with rheumatoid fever and septic arthiritis in the same knee, but haven't had those problems in several years. Should I be worried about the pain? And is there something I can do to stop it, or at least be able to exercise without feeling pain.
