Debilitating back pain

Patient

Q: My husband is having sever back pain and muscle spasms in his back which cause him to have nausea, vomitting, headaches, neck pain, irritability & stomach pain & cramping. He isn't sleeping or eating much as it is happening every hour or two and he ends up vomitting the food up. He spends hours in the shower crouched on the floor letting the hot water hit his back but it brings little relief. He has been to the ER and they just said he has a bad back which is connected to the vomitting and told him to take ibuprofen or aleve. Neither is helping in any way and I am beginning to worry that it is some kind of bacterial infection or something much worse than just back pain. He has not worked in a week and doesn't seem to be getting any better. What are some things that could be causing his sever pain, vomitting, etc?
