Patient : I have had diabetes for many years. I have recently lost 25 pounds through the south beach diet and am no longer on any insulin. We are now trying to control my glucose levels with metformin and excercise. When I checked last night before supper, my reading was 194. After 30 minutes of exercise it was down to 118. I then took the metformin and ate supper of steak, a small flour tortilla, and a salad. Four hours later, my reading was 198. This morning my reading was 224. We tried the supplement of alpha lipoic acid this morning, and my reading was 240 at lunch. About a month ago, all of my readings were 120 or lower after taking me off of the insulin. My question is this...Could it be that I don't need the medicine? Is my sugar dropping then spiking?
