Did I pinch, pull, or break something?

Patient : I'm getting over a minor case of the flu. I can take deep breathes without wheezing, but once i start coughing, the episodes can get a little violent. Last night I coughed a lot while I tried to sleep. I worked from 2.a.m to 7 a.m. without much coughing but a pain in the left side of my back started to develop. I got home, took a bath to help ease the aches, and went back to bed. As soon as I laid down the pain in my back was unbearable, no matter what possession I tried. I can sit, without pain, but if I take a deep breath as my chest expands the pain increases. What did I do?
