Do I need a pelvic exam to go on birth control?

Patient : Is it medically required to get a pelvic exam before a gynecologist can prescribe you birth control? I am a virgin, and am going on the pill to regulate my period. I have an appointment for this in two days with a gyno for the first time, and I am very anxious and nervous about the pelvic exam. All of my friends who are on the pill did not need a pelvic exam, but my mom keeps freaking me out that I do.
