Do I need surgery for a five cm ovarian cyst?

Patient

Q: Hello, I am a 12 year old girl who was diagnosed with a 5cm ovarian cyst about 3 months ago. It has been giving me quite a bit of discomfort, and my doctor says to watch and wait, but I really just want to have surgery so I won't have any more pain. And by the way, I have never had a menstrual period yet. Do you think I need surgery?

Doctor

A:   I agree with your doctor's current suggestion. The cyst may resolve on its own with time. You can speak with your doctor about prescribing adequate pain relief medication. Should your symptoms persist or worsen then surgery can be considered.
