Does Lamotrigine prevent pregnancy?

Patient

Q: Would 200mg of Lamotrigine prevent pregnancy?

Doctor

A:   Thank you for your query.
Lamotrigine is used to treat epilepsy. It does not prevent pregnancy but when on this medication, effective contraceptives should be used, or abstain from penetrative sex to avoid a pregnancy. Pregnancy or planning to be pregnant while on this medicine is not recommended. This medicine can also make oral contraceptive pills less effective. While on lamotrigine it is advisable to discuss with medical doctor about your phase of pregnancy.
Hope that answers your query. Have a good day.
