Family history of Gestational diabetes

Patient

Q: I was gestational diabetic when i was pregnant with my daughter. my daughter is pregnant now will she be at higher risk of having gestational diabetes as well?

Doctor

A:   Your daughter would be at risk of developing gestational diabetes if she is overweight, has had gestational diabetes before and has a family history of gestational diabetes. Since she is at risk for gestational diabetes, her doctor may check her blood sugar levels at her first prenatal visit. If the test results are normal, then her sugar levels will be checked again sometime between weeks 24 and 28 of your pregnancy.
