Genital warts relayed between monogamous partners

Q: My boyfriend had genital warts last year for the first time and got them removed. I now have them and am waiting for an appointment to get them removed (and get a smear test). my question is, can we still have sex since he has already been in contact with the virus? In the research that I have seen it seems it takes around 18 months to be "free" of the virus (no further warts appearing), so would being in contact with new warts reinfect him somehow? would we then be relaying the virus in its active state back and forth and prolonging the average time it takes to not have more warts?

Symptoms:  genital warts.
