How pregnant do you have to be to test positive

Patient

Q: I took a pregnancy test at a clinic, at 6pm, and it read negative and then changed to positive after several minuites beyond the testing time. They said that the test was unreliable and that I could be pregnant but that it is to early to tell. I was told to come back if I had not started my period in 10 days. I lasted 4 days and took a home pregnancy test. The home test, at 7am using fmu, said positive. My question is, how pregnant is not pregnant enough to read on a pregnancy test right away. I am trying to place a time frame to when and where my birthcontrol failed. Would 6 weeks or more always come back positive or is that not pregnant enough to always read on a test. Or, is 2 weeks or less not pregnant enough to read on a test. I am very confused and scared. I could use some helpfull answers. Thank you.
