How to tell between ankle sprain/fracture

Q: I injured my ankle at work back in January and have been taking doctor prescribed Physical Therapy the past 2 weeks. It has helped but I am still experiencing pain around my ankle and up towards my knee. The doctor also took xrays and determined that it is a sprain however I am not so sure. What is the best way to find out if it is indeed just a sprain or maybe a slight fracture??

Symptoms:  Pain around ankle and up towards knee, comes and goes with or without activity, tender at sites of pain, slight swelling at ankle site.
