I have a 7 week old baby, and I am breastfeeding

Patient

Q: I have a 7 week old baby, and I am breastfeeding. After I nurse I burp her, and sometimes when she spits up it smells like skunk...why is that, and is it normal?

Doctor

A:   Hello,
Thanks for the query.

If your concern is the smell of the vomit or spit of your baby. After burping, breast milk mixes with stomach acids which can make it smell like a skunk. This is absolutely normal. You can try to express your breast milk and see if the smell is foul or of a fleshy odour.

Hope this helps.
All the best.
