Increased knee pain

Patient : My knee has bothered me for years. On a scale of 1-10 the pain was always around a 2. It would spike up after I would run or if I was sitting and it was stationary for a long time. As of later the pain has increased to around a 6 most of the time and spikes higher after walking even a short distance, climbing stairs cause pain and I can feel a slight popping or grinding type feeling fairly often. What could the issue be?
