Iron Iron rda vs. absorption

Patient

Q: I see that the rda for iron is 8mg/day for males in my age group. Does that mean that I should be consuming 8mg per day from all sources, or does that mean that I should consume enough iron to actually absorb 8mg/day. I am unsure to which the rda value refers.

Also, due to a restricted diet, I am forced to take an iron supplement. I am currently taking a liquid ferrous sulfate solution. Roughly how much of this supplement is absorbed? I want to make sure that I do not take too much.

Thank you!
