Iron Supplement Dosage Question for Toddler

Patient

Q: Hi,

My 14 month old was diagnosed as anemic recently. Our ped prescribed an iron supplement and recommended that we give our kid 1mL three times a day. On the package, it says that 1mL equal 15mg of elemental iron so three times a day would equal 45mg of elemental iron. My 14mos old is 15lbs so I was wondering if 45mg of elemental iron way too much for her. I thought a toddler only needs about 8-15mg of iron a day so why would she need 45mg of iron supplement plus iron that she would get from her daily food. Is 45mg a day a normal intake for someone her age and size who is anemic? Thank you for your response!
