Knee cap catches

Patient : Knee caps 'catch' when straighten leg. Is this normal?
Symptoms:  I dislocated my left knee cap a few months ago, and now when I straighten my leg my kneecap stays in the same place for a second until I straighten it further and then it pops back to where it should be. Sometimes it feels like it's grinding against something. When I've been sitting for a while and stand up it seems like I have to straighten my leg a bit more before it moves back into place, and often hurts. This sometimes happens with my right knee too but it moves back sooner. I'm not sure if this is normal or if the knee cap should glide smoothly. I've had knee pain when squatting, running etc. and 'cracking' for a few years, but have never noticed this before.
