Knee injury still unhealed after almost three months

Patient

Q: Back in the beginning of December I slipped on an escalator and received three deep cuts on the middle of my knee cap from the edge of the step. In addition, I hit my knee extremely hard. The next couple of days the pain was so extreme I couldn't walk and my knee popped out of place when I tried to stand. I had x-rays done and the specialist said I just bruised my knee. However, I still experience dull pain throughout the day, and a little more discomfort when I lay down or when I first wake up. I have noticed a knot on the top of my knee cap. Two days ago, a co-worker bumped into me and my knee gave out and I fell over. Not only was it embarrassing, but my knee has been bothering me even more. It's not as bad when I was first injured, but uncomfortable. Was I misdiagnosed, or do these injuries take this long to heal?
