Knee pain

Patient : I am a service member and have been quite active. My knee cap has been in a deal of pain for almost a year. Docs acknowledge there is a popping and said my knee cap wasn't tracking properly. Started me on PT for a muscular imbalance. When this wasn't working they ordered an MRI. They got my results and said my cartilage is okay not anything that would need surgery but that there is a small tear in my calf. They want to do PT again. Please tell me what's going on. I have got to the point where I limp everywhere.
Symptoms:  Pain, popping and overall discomfort.
