Low blood level and nitric oxide

Patient

Q: Hi i would like to know if a person with low red blood cells (adult 34 years old, blood level 7.6) can take nitric oxide?

Doctor

A:   Hello,
Thank you for your medical query at AskTheDoctor.com

I understand your concern.
You mentioned your blood level is 7.6. The statement is not very clear if you meant to imply, your hemoglobin is only 7.6, you should stay away from nitric oxide as of now. RBCs can be slightly low, there is no relationship of RBCs with the nitric oxide, however, hemoglobin indicates the oxygen carrying capacity, and nitric oxide acts by causing vasodilatation systemically. This can end up causing hypoxia, till your hemoglobin is corrected.

So kindly avoid till your hemoglobin is over 10 g/dl.

Hope this was helpful,
Regards
