Menopause and emotions

Q: I often here about anxiety, depression and hormonal changes, mood swings and irritability among women entering menopause. I have been in a relationship with a woman for the past eight years It has been a very rewarding relationship built on love, trust and a genuine enjoyment of each others company. Recently my girlfriend unexpectedly and with no warning signs informed me that she no longer has feelings for me, wants to be alone and needs to find out who she is. I have not been able to get anywhere with her discussing this matter. She insists I have done nothing wrong nor have I changed. She just no longer loves me. More than one friend of mine suggested menopause. (She turned 52 in June) I am hesitant to believe that someone could make such a drastic change and life changing decision based upon this but they seem to believe it is possible. Can menopause cause women to react this way with no warning? What can be done if anything? Might she eventually come around over time?
