Moving from twenty eight day pill to twenty one day pill

Q: Last time i went to the doctors to get more contraceptives, he gave me a 21 day pill when I had previously been on a 28 day pill. I had just finished a pack of the 28 day tablets, and have taken one of the new active tablets. I wondered if I am protected at the moment, as the instructions on the new pack of tablets says to start taking them after my last active tablet, but at the point the tablets were prescribed, I had already started taking the inactive drugs. Any help would be greatly appreciated as at the moment I have no idea whether Im able to have sex or not and its not good for my husband lol. Thanks!
