Patient :I've been having really bad back pain lately. When I wake up, my back hurts and I can't seem to get comfortable. I'm 16 and my back pack is heavy so it doesn't help. If I barely move or apply pressure on it, it hurts a lot. I'm sort of stressed too because school is too much. But why does my back hurt so much?
Thanks for choosing "Ask the Doctor" for posting your query.
Back pain at this age can be due to varied reasons such as bad sitting posture, carrying very heavy weight, strained muscles or ligaments or a muscle spasm. However, more serious causes for back pain like sciatica, degenerative disc disorder or ruptured/prolapse disc also should not be ignored.
I would suggest you to consult your physician who would carry out physical examination and interview you properly for diagnosing the cause. Imaging scans like X-ray, MRI/CT may also be required.
Certain pain killers and muscle relaxants like ibuprofen or diclofenac and chlorzoxasone or tizanidine might help in alleviating your symptoms till the diagnosis is done. You can ask your doctor's opinion regarding prescribing these drugs.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
Wish you good health!
