My elderly father (age 91) who lives in Victoria, BC,
Patient :My elderly father (age 91) who lives in Victoria, BC, Canada, suffers from chronic skin itching on his back, chest and genital areas which at times becomes unbearable. It started about 1 year ago and is now incessant, disrupting his sleep and severely affecting his quality of life. He has seen multiple specialists including a neurologist, endocrinologist, geriatrician, dermatologist as well as alternative medical practitioners such as a Chinese herbalist and acupuncturist, but all to no effect.
He has tried cortisone-based creams which did not work and is currently using glycerine moisturizing creams to try and soothe the itching symptoms, but these provide only minimal and very temporary relief. He has been put onto prednisone by his GP, which does seem to work, but we are concerned about its long term side effects.
I have been investigating CFS (Cutaneous Field Stimulation) as a possible treatment, but cannot seem to find any doctors who offer this kind of treatment.
Can anybody in the ATD network offer any other possible medical treatment?
Symptoms: Incessant skin itching on back, chest, lower abdomen and genital areas. Particularly bad at night time.
