My mother has degenerative disc disease for 20 years After

Patient : My mother has degenerative disc disease for 20 years. After several unsuccessful back surgeries and every type of rehabilitation, She has been prescribed 3, 30 mg oxycodone and 125 mg of fentanyl patch a day to keep her functioning and out of pain for the last ten years. Her current doctor has decided to ween her off all meds in a matter of 3 months. She is in severe pain and having major withdrawal syndrome. This weaning schedule seems very harsh for the the amount of medication and the amount of time she has been on them. I'm her son and it is difficult to watch. Is there any reason a doctor would do this out of the blue? She has tried every other method to reduce pain. She has had 4 back surgeries, all unsuccessful. The doctor's explanation is that laws have changed although I don't think this is the case in California. Any advice or explanation on this steep weening schedule. She is 65 and no quality of life since she can't get out of bed most days. Thank you.
