Negative hpt could I still be pregnant

Patient : Hi Dr I used to have irregular periods then I started using birth control pills from November. Then in March I bled excessively and my period came twice then I stopped using pills. My last period was from 19 to 23 March. Since then I missed my periods in April. Today it's the 17th of MAY and still nothing. Exactly 2 weeks ago I had unprotected sex. When did I ovulate? I took an hpt yesterday and it came negative. Could I be pregnant although the test came negative? Thank you
Symptoms:  Period like pains I pee a lot. I also had terrible abdominal cramps
