No bleeding after a surgical abortion

Patient: I had an abortion on Friday 11 March, however early Friday night i stopped bleeding and have had no more blood since. Only a brown discharge. Is it advisable to go back to the hospital?

Doctor: There is no need to return to hospital. The ‘brown’ discharge is actually blood mixed with other tissue and this too wil ll stop shortly. Persistent bleeding after an abortion is a sign that a complication has occurred and warrants a return to the doctor.
